Drove to border and crossed out of Benin without major problems. Then we entered the large Nigerian border compound and an officer asked for money before we even arrived at the first station. I took all four passports to Immigration while Jim registered the cars. Then Jim registered the exact same information on the car at another station while various officers checked our passports over and over again. One officer said to me, “Sure wish I had a cold drink”. I replied, “Me too”, as sweat from the oppressive humidity poured down my neck and back. Later I learned this is an indirect request for money.

This border had more officers on duty than any border I’ve crossed and they didn’t all have work. They just stood around talking or asking for passports or writing down the same thing that the guy beside him just wrote down.
