2 September 2000 – Midday Jim and I took a taxi over to The Stanley Hotel, an old Colonial relic in the middle of town with a street side café. We ditched our taxi after reaching yet another traffic jam, all too common in Nairobi – a city of two million and almost no traffic lights. Walking through the crowded streets, we window shopped and entered a couple of curio shops filled with overpriced items or ‘antiques’ made yesterday and ‘aged’ with shoe polish. After half an hour, we found The Stanley’s Thorn Tree Café, built in the early 1900s, drank coffee and watched Nairobi’s day develo
