The night market – a phenomenon we’ve experienced in most Muslim cultures – along the banks of the Indian Ocean in Stone Town is a fantastic place to devour delicious, local dishes. For sale: kebabs of chicken and beef, sugar cane drink (the long, thick cane, which looks like green bamboo, is beaten with a hammer and then sent through a flattening machine that squeezes the juice out of the cane), grilled corn, shrimp, crab legs, ‘African pizzas’ with grilled flour on either side of meat and/or vegetables, fried potatoes, soft drinks and more. The daily market opens at 6 p.m. (1800) and by 10 p.m. (2200) the cooking, bargaining and selling still continue going strong with tourists and locals alike eating tasty, but inexpensive food. Electricity lights this market, unlike scores we’ve seen lit by lanterns and candles, but few chairs and tables exist in Stone Town. So while eating a kebab from a wooden skewer, stroll through more of the food market or browse the adjoining handicrafts market reveling in the mysterious, magical mood of the night market, a must-experience. This is living!
